Building a Stronger Owen Sound: Land Access for All

Building a Stronger Owen Sound: Land Access for All

Welcome to the Local Help Owen Sound blog! Our mission is to create a stronger, more self-reliant community by organizing Owen Sound into a network of blocks, villages, and neighborhoods. This structure will empower residents to make decisions at the local level and work towards a shared goal: ensuring every Owen Sound resident has access to land in the county for growing food, harvesting firewood, and potentially building housing.

A Community-Driven Structure

In our proposed system, Owen Sound is divided into blocks, each led by a block leader. These leaders are your first point of contact, helping to coordinate local initiatives and address community needs. Six blocks come together to form a village, and ten villages create a neighborhood. With six neighborhoods in total—each aligned with one of Owen Sound’s six Councillors—this setup ensures that decision-making happens as close to home as possible.

This approach is rooted in subsidiarity, a principle that says decisions should be made by the smallest, most local group capable of handling them. Block leaders tackle small-scale issues, villages manage broader concerns, and neighborhoods connect to the bigger picture, giving you a direct voice in the matters that impact your daily life.

The Vision: Land Access for Every Resident

Our long-term goal is simple yet ambitious: to help every Owen Sound resident gain access to land in the county for growing their own food, harvesting firewood, and potentially building housing units. Why does this matter? Because land access is the foundation of a sustainable, self-sufficient community—especially as we face challenges like climate change, rising costs, and resource uncertainty.

Imagine:

  • Growing your own food to reduce grocery bills and ensure fresh, local produce.
  • Harvesting firewood to heat your home affordably as energy prices climb.
  • Building housing units to address shortages and create community-focused living spaces.

Land access isn’t just about convenience—it’s about security, independence, and resilience for Owen Sound.

How We’ll Get There

Turning this vision into reality requires action. Here’s how we can make it happen:

  1. Community Organizing: Form block groups and elect block leaders to coordinate efforts and connect neighbours.
  2. Land Identification: Partner with local government and landowners to find underused or available land in the county for community use.
  3. Policy Advocacy: Push for municipal policies—like tax incentives for land-sharing or zoning changes for community gardens—to support this initiative.
  4. Pilot Programs: Start with small projects, such as community gardens or land-sharing agreements, to show what’s possible and build momentum.
  5. Education and Outreach: Offer workshops on sustainable land use and food production to equip residents with the skills they need.

Facing the Challenges

We won’t pretend this will be simple. There could be resistance from landowners, legal hurdles, or logistical headaches in organizing a project this big. But we can overcome these by:

  • Offering incentives like tax breaks to encourage landowners to participate.
  • Working within existing laws and advocating for practical zoning adjustments.
  • Starting small and local, proving the concept before scaling up.

With community support and a step-by-step approach, these obstacles become opportunities.
