Hook: Rodeo Funds Local Health Care Services
Grey County · County Council · May 14, 2026
Summary
On May 14, 2026, the Grey County Council convened not just as a legislative body but as a community stewardship hub, pivoting early from administrative rote-routines to focus on tangible local assets and human needs. The meeting began by recognizing nurses during National Nurses Week, acknowledging their critical role in a region where Georgian College's recent four-year accreditation is now funneling additional area students into vital healthcare pipelines despite the sobering statistic that only 14 of the graduating nursing cohort from Jordan College secured placements last year. The Council moved quickly past procedural formalities to address specific community anchors: the Newstead Lions Club, marking its fiftieth anniversary with a tradition of serving fresh seafood; and Fever Sham Community Center, which is gearing up for its sixth annual Ram Rodeo fundraiser—a five-year campaign that has already mobilized $190,000 exclusively for local health services. The session underscored a distinct commitment to retaining talent within the region by linking educational accreditation directly to regional hospital needs while simultaneously welcoming new Canadian citizens through events hosted with MP Alex Ruff and The Y.

00:04:01 Speaker 06: minutes that's been made, or do
00:04:04 Speaker 06: we need to amend them from
00:04:11 Speaker 06: the presentation from Loza? The clerk
00:04:14 Speaker 06: advises that the change has been

00:04:36 Speaker 07: to single tier. Just to confirm,
00:04:41 Speaker 07: the area that organization represents. Very
00:04:44 Speaker 07: good. Any other questions? Discussion on
00:04:45 Speaker 07: those minutes? Seeing none. I'll call
00:04:47 Speaker 07: the question. All those in favor?
00:04:49 Speaker 07: All question. All those in favor?

00:05:24 Speaker 08: favor? That is carried. Thank you.
00:05:25 Speaker 08: News and celebrations. There is one
00:05:26 Speaker 08: matter. Where is it? Oh, there's
00:05:30 Speaker 08: actually a few, I'm sure. But
00:05:34 Speaker 08: we're going to start. This is
00:05:35 Speaker 08: Nurses Week in Canada, National Nursing
00:05:36 Speaker 08: Week, and I'd like to take
00:05:38 Speaker 08: a moment to recognize and thank
00:05:41 Speaker 08: all nurses across Gray County for
00:05:45 Speaker 08: the essential care, compassion, and professionalism
00:05:46 Speaker 08: they bring to our communities every.
00:05:49 Speaker 08: single day. We of course expand
00:05:50 Speaker 08: extend our deep appreciation to the
00:05:53 Speaker 08: nurses working in Lee Manor, Gray
00:05:55 Speaker 08: Gables, and Rockwood Terrace. Their dedication,
00:05:56 Speaker 08: along with all of those working
00:06:00 Speaker 08: in long-term care, supports some of
00:06:02 Speaker 08: our most vulnerable residents. Their work
00:06:04 Speaker 08: means makes a meaningful difference in
00:06:06 Speaker 08: their comfort, dignity, and quality of
00:06:09 Speaker 08: life, and provides peace of mind
00:06:11 Speaker 08: to loved ones and families. This
00:06:13 Speaker 08: week also marks an important milestone
00:06:15 Speaker 08: locally as Georgian College. Locally, as
00:06:18 Speaker 08: Georgian College's own Sound Campus celebrates
00:06:20 Speaker 08: the first graduates of its Honors
00:06:23 Speaker 08: Bachelor of Science Nursing program, congratulations
00:06:26 Speaker 08: to the new graduates on completing
00:06:28 Speaker 08: four years of demanding study and
00:06:29 Speaker 08: hands-on placements. It seems not that
00:06:31 Speaker 08: long ago, but you may recall
00:06:33 Speaker 08: that a number of years ago,
00:06:35 Speaker 08: Grey County committed one million dollars
00:06:37 Speaker 08: to the nursing and wellness
00:06:39 Speaker 08: wing at the Own Sound Campus.
00:06:41 Speaker 08: The investment reflects our commitment to
00:06:45 Speaker 08: strengthening local healthcare and supporting those
00:06:46 Speaker 08: who choose. this important career path
00:06:48 Speaker 08: right here in Gray County. So
00:06:53 Speaker 08: to all nurses, and I will
00:06:55 Speaker 08: note that in my own family,
00:06:57 Speaker 08: I've had many members in the
00:06:59 Speaker 08: nursing profession, including my own daughter
00:07:01 Speaker 08: out in the West Coast. So
00:07:03 Speaker 08: to all those nurses, Happy Nurses
00:07:09 Speaker 08: Week, and thank you for all
00:07:10 Speaker 08: that you do to keep our
00:07:16 Speaker 08: communities healthy. Nile, you have. some
00:07:19 Speaker 09: good news for us as well.
00:07:21 Speaker 09: Please. Good morning. Thank you, Chair,
00:07:24 Speaker 09: and members of Council. I'm here
00:07:25 Speaker 09: to recognise Public Works Week, which
00:07:26 Speaker 09: happens next week. Director Hoy is
00:07:29 Speaker 09: unable to join us today. He's
00:07:31 Speaker 09: busy in bargaining with several members
00:07:33 Speaker 09: of the team today. So each
00:07:36 Speaker 09: year, OPWA, the Ontario Public Works
00:07:38 Speaker 09: Association, marks Public Works Week to
00:07:40 Speaker 09: recognise the. public works professionals across
00:07:43 Speaker 09: Ontario. This is part of a
00:07:44 Speaker 09: broader North American-wide celebration of the
00:07:47 Speaker 09: people whose work supports the everyday
00:07:50 Speaker 09: lives of residents, visitors, and businesses.
00:07:52 Speaker 09: This year's theme is rooted in
00:07:54 Speaker 09: service, powered by community, and is
00:07:55 Speaker 09: an especially fitting one. It recognises
00:07:58 Speaker 09: that the roots of public service
00:08:00 Speaker 09: run deep in public works, and
00:08:02 Speaker 09: that this commitment has driven the
00:08:03 Speaker 09: innovation and care that allow our
00:08:05 Speaker 09: communities to grow into places where
00:08:07 Speaker 09: people can live, work, and thrive.
00:08:10 Speaker 09: It also reflects that our public
00:08:12 Speaker 09: works staff are themselves deeply rooted
00:08:14 Speaker 09: in community. They play integral roles
00:08:15 Speaker 09: shaping their community outside of the
00:08:17 Speaker 09: seven to four that they work
00:08:20 Speaker 09: with us, with their families and
00:08:22 Speaker 09: their friends. Some public works contributions
00:08:24 Speaker 09: are highly visible, like building and
00:08:26 Speaker 09: maintaining our roads and bridges. While
00:08:28 Speaker 09: others, such as maintaining water and
00:08:30 Speaker 09: sewer systems, which can which are
00:08:33 Speaker 09: undertaken across Grey County, happen largely
00:08:34 Speaker 09: out of sight. But together, these
00:08:38 Speaker 09: efforts form the foundation. of strong
00:08:41 Speaker 09: and resilient communities. Every product, sorry,
00:08:43 Speaker 09: project, whether seen or unseen, reflects
00:08:45 Speaker 09: the deep connection between service and
00:08:46 Speaker 09: the people it supports. With Public
00:08:47 Speaker 09: Works Week coming up next week,
00:08:49 Speaker 09: I want to take a moment
00:08:52 Speaker 09: on behalf of Great County Councils
00:08:54 Speaker 09: and staff, and indeed all our
00:08:56 Speaker 09: communities, to sincerely thank Great County
00:08:58 Speaker 09: Public Works staff. Whether it
00:09:01 Speaker 09: be the long days, unpredictable weather,
00:09:02 Speaker 09: aging infrastructure, tight timelines, or responding
00:09:05 Speaker 09: to urgent issues with little notice.
00:09:08 Speaker 09: you consistently meet these challenges with
00:09:08 Speaker 09: professionalism, skill, and dedication. And it
00:09:10 Speaker 09: is my honour to work alongside
00:09:12 Speaker 09: of you. Much of your work
00:09:14 Speaker 09: happens behind the scenes, and its
00:09:15 Speaker 09: impact is felt every single day
00:09:18 Speaker 09: across Grey County. And it truly
00:09:22 Speaker 09: does not go unnoticed. Thank you,
00:09:25 Speaker 09: Chair. Thank you, Niall. Well spoken.
00:09:34 Speaker 09: We have an item here from
00:09:37 Speaker 09: Kevin McNabb. Kevin, please. Good morning,
00:09:39 Speaker 10: County Council. Paramedic Services Week is
00:09:41 Speaker 10: being recognized in Grey County and
00:09:43 Speaker 10: across Ontario from May 17th to
00:09:45 Speaker 10: the 23rd. This year's theme, "Better
00:09:47 Speaker 10: Care Starts Here," highlights the important
00:09:50 Speaker 10: role paramedics play every day in
00:09:52 Speaker 10: caring for our residents. Paramedics provide
00:09:54 Speaker 10: skilled, compassionate care in many settings,
00:09:56 Speaker 10: from responding to 911 emergencies to
00:09:59 Speaker 10: supporting patients in their homes and
00:10:01 Speaker 10: reaching those in need through
00:10:04 Speaker 10: outreach programs. in Gray County,
00:10:06 Speaker 10: this includes 911 emergency response,
00:10:08 Speaker 10: community paramedicine, and supportive outreach
00:10:11 Speaker 10: services, supported by supervisors, managers, and
00:10:13 Speaker 10: administrative staff, and strong community partners.
00:10:15 Speaker 10: Together, this work helps ensure people
00:10:17 Speaker 10: receive the support they need when
00:10:19 Speaker 10: and where they need it. This
00:10:20 Speaker 10: upcoming week is an opportunity to
00:10:21 Speaker 10: recognize the great work that paramedics
00:10:24 Speaker 10: do and to say thank you
00:10:25 Speaker 10: for their dedication and care. So,
00:10:26 Speaker 10: we'll have a number of events
00:10:28 Speaker 10: next week throughout the county, saying
00:10:30 Speaker 10: thank you to the paramedics. We
00:10:31 Speaker 10: always open up the week by
00:10:32 Speaker 10: our poster each year. It has
00:10:34 Speaker 10: a theme, and this year's theme
00:10:36 Speaker 10: being care here at home. We,
00:10:38 Speaker 10: with the help of our communication
00:10:39 Speaker 10: staff and Olivia Yale, the great
00:10:40 Speaker 10: work she did put this together
00:10:44 Speaker 10: for us in the Shaver County,
00:10:47 Speaker 10: and it shows different different paramedics
00:10:52 Speaker 10: throughout our service. So thanks. Thanks,
00:10:57 Speaker 10: Kevin. Tara, you have an introduction
00:10:58 Speaker 11: you'd like to do. Thank you.
00:10:59 Speaker 11: We do have a new face
00:11:01 Speaker 11: in the clerks' department that I
00:11:03 Speaker 11: just like to introduce to Council.
00:11:04 Speaker 11: Megan Hannah has joined us for
00:11:05 Speaker 11: the summer months and is doing
00:11:07 Speaker 11: a lot of great work already,
00:11:08 Speaker 11: writing policies and doing a lot
00:11:11 Speaker 11: of work in records management. So
00:11:16 Speaker 11: welcome, welcome, Megan. I'd also like
00:11:18 Speaker 11: to, yes, I'd also like to
00:11:21 Speaker 11: recognize Brittany Rye. This is her
00:11:22 Speaker 11: last official day as acting deputy
00:11:24 Speaker 11: clerk with Gray County, so she's
00:11:25 Speaker 11: moving to the Parimank Services Department.
00:11:26 Speaker 11: And to thank Brittany for also.
00:11:27 Speaker 11: a lot of the wonderful work
00:11:36 Speaker 11: that you've done over the past
00:11:37 Speaker 11: year. Thank you. Thank you, Tara,
00:11:41 Speaker 12: and thank you, Brittany, and thank
00:11:44 Speaker 12: you, Megan. Savannah, you have an
00:11:46 Speaker 12: item. Welcome. Come ahead. Thank you
00:11:47 Speaker 12: so much. Good morning, County Council.
00:11:48 Speaker 12: On your desks, you will see
00:11:50 Speaker 12: a little card. This is the
00:11:53 Speaker 12: member preview for Wild Weather, which
00:11:54 Speaker 12: is happening this Friday. The exhibit
00:11:56 Speaker 12: officially opens. It officially opens this
00:11:59 Speaker 12: weekend, which we're very excited about.
00:12:01 Speaker 12: It is all about extreme weather
00:12:03 Speaker 12: right across the world, and then
00:12:04 Speaker 12: we also have a local stories
00:12:06 Speaker 12: changing weather exhibit put on by
00:12:08 Speaker 12: George and Bluffs Climate Action Team
00:12:09 Speaker 12: happening at the same time. So
00:12:10 Speaker 12: we're very excited about this exhibit.
00:12:11 Speaker 12: We think it's going to draw
00:12:15 Speaker 12: a lot of attention, and please
00:12:18 Speaker 12: come check it out at Gray

A farmer notes a backward spring with cold temperatures and rain but observes an improvement in weather conditions and a lack of severe insect activity.
00:12:19 Speaker 08: Roots beginning this weekend. Thank you,
00:12:21 Speaker 08: Savannah. And I can tell you
00:12:23 Speaker 08: that as a as a farmer,
00:12:28 Speaker 08: the weather this spring has been.
00:12:30 Speaker 08: shall we say, a little backward.
00:12:31 Speaker 08: But the long-range calls: twenty-six degrees
00:12:34 Speaker 08: on Monday. I can't believe that.
00:12:35 Speaker 08: We'll see. It was three degrees
00:12:37 Speaker 08: and peeing down rain this morning
00:12:39 Speaker 08: when I left home. So it's
00:12:41 Speaker 08: a big improvement so far. We'll
00:12:43 Speaker 08: see. We'll see how the weekend
00:12:44 Speaker 08: plays out. What's that? There's nobody.
00:12:46 Speaker 08: Yeah, the black flies haven't been
00:12:52 Speaker 08: bad so far. That's true. True

Councilor McQueen reported attending the graduation ceremony for Jordan College's nursing program, noting that only fourteen of thirty students graduated.
00:12:55 Speaker 08: enough. There's always an upside. Okay,
00:12:58 Speaker 08: council. Any? news, celebrations, anything, Chair
00:13:00 Speaker 08: Councilor McQueen? Go ahead, please. Thank
00:13:02 Speaker 13: you, Mister Warden. Just to follow
00:13:05 Speaker 13: up, we were saying about the
00:13:07 Speaker 13: nursing first graduating nursing from the
00:13:13 Speaker 13: nursing program here in Jordan College.
00:13:14 Speaker 13: I attended that ceremony. My oldest
00:13:17 Speaker 13: son's partner graduated from that program.
00:13:20 Speaker 13: She was actually the Vala Victorian,
00:13:26 Speaker 13: McKenna Stewart, but I think that
