I don’t know about starting the broadcast (I’m not a morning person), but I know one of my local TV stations used to end the broadcast at night by playing the state song before going off air. I used to see it sometimes if I dozed off and left the TV on for an hour or so after the midnight Deep Space Nine rerun.
Deep Space Nine, Night Man (which was very mediocre, BTW), Georgia On My Mind, static.
Our local station (probably a couple decades before you were dozing off) always played some radio announcer reading High Flight as the sign-off, followed by a test pattern. I was staying up to see reruns of The Prisoner.
