Have you ever considered that the Prime Directive is not only not ethical, but also illogical, and perhaps morally indefensible?

7 found this helpful·2 months agoIf I remember correctly, the Sussex property itself is inadequate for modern security needs, so I agree completely, with the caveat that they should find another location.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Carney announces $35B for defence, infrastructure in Canada's NorthEnglish
17 found this helpful·3 months agoMost of the investment — approximately $32 billion — is being drawn from a pool of money set aside almost four years ago by former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s government to modernize NORAD, the binational North American air defence command shared with the United States.
So not necessarily new funds, but perhaps a more solid plan on what it will be spent on.

Canada@lemmy.ca•PM Carney says Conservative MP Jeneroux crossing the floor to the LiberalsEnglish
0 found this helpful·3 months ago“Those conversations [with his family over the holidays] have been honest, difficult and deeply personal at times. But they also led me to reflect on the gravity of the moment that our country is living through — which our prime minister addressed head on in his speech at Davos. For Canada, this is a moment that demands steady leadership, constructive collaboration between all parliamentarians.”
“After further reflection with my family, and conversations with colleagues and constituents, I will be continuing to serve in Parliament — and I will be working with Prime Minister Mark Carney as a part of his new government to help build our country’s strength as we face the challenges ahead.”

Canada@lemmy.ca•Why did U.S. — not Canadian — fighter jets respond to alleged hijacking of B.C. plane?English
0 found this helpful·10 months agoIt’s definitely a case of NORAD working as designed. Which is good!
The fact that we’re borderline amazed that it’s working as designed is much less good.

0 found this helpful·10 months agoYeah, the most imminent air threat has historically been over the pole, which is why CFB Cold Lake exists.
The squadrons on Vancouver Island are for surveillance and search-and-rescue, which is entirely sensible for the coast.

1 found this helpful·1 year agoAs much as I agree that one doesn’t “run for Prime Minister,” and I wish everyone would stop using that phrasing…the party sure as shit should be running to form government.

I’d like to see a little more scrutiny of the way the media reports on and frames these things, too.
There are far too many stories that basically start and end at “this government project will cost X millions/billions/whatever,” without putting any effort into exploring whether that’s a lot of money in context. It’s always going to sound like a lot without proper analysis.
